Workmanship terms apply to how the project was assembled and installed. The clock starts at project completion and runs one to two years on most outdoor builds. Some structural elements get longer coverage where industry standard practice warrants it.

What does this actually cover in practice? Posts that settle or lean because the base preparation missed spec. Paving stones that shift due to inadequate base compaction or improper edge restraints. Deck boards that twist or pull free of fasteners during the first season. Fence panels that come loose at the post connection. Retaining wall blocks that move because drainage planning was inadequate. Each of these traces back to install work, not to the material itself.

When something covered fails, Sungreen returns and fixes it. That might mean re-setting posts, re-compacting base, re-fastening loose components, or whatever specific action restores the install to spec. The homeowner pays nothing for remedy work covered under the agreement.

Manufacturer coverage runs separately and depends on what gets installed.

Composite decking typically comes with a 25-year manufacturer warranty on the boards themselves. Cedar lumber is different. It does not carry a manufacturer warranty in that way, since wood is a natural product, though proper grade selection at the lumber yard handles the rot and structural integrity expectations. Over on the vinyl side, fence panels carry lifetime or 20-30 year manufacturer coverage on the material. Aluminum railings and pergola systems come with 20-30 year coverage on the finish and structure. Paving stone systems from major manufacturers (Belgard, Techo-Bloc, Barkman) include warranties on the stones themselves, usually lifetime structural plus limited cosmetic coverage.

Sungreen provides the manufacturer documentation at handover. The homeowner registers each policy directly with the manufacturer if registration is required. We assist with claim filings if a material claim arises later.

Some items fall outside warranty coverage by design.

Normal wear and weathering. Cedar deck boards that grey naturally over time without other failure. Paving stones that show normal traffic patterns after years of use. Fence posts that show typical weathering on the surface.

Damage from third-party causes. A tree falling on a deck, a vehicle backing into a fence, a contractor damaging the install during unrelated property work.

Failure to maintain. Cedar decks and fences need regular staining or sealing. When those materials degrade because the recommended maintenance schedule got skipped, that lands outside coverage.

Acts of nature beyond what reasonable design accommodates. Calgary hailstorms can damage outdoor surfaces. Major flooding can shift base preparation regardless of design standard.

These exclusions are standard across the industry. Sungreen terms align with industry norms on what gets covered and what does not.

The site visit confirms whether the issue is workmanship-related, material-related, or outside warranty coverage.

When the issue falls under workmanship coverage, we book the remedy work at no charge and most fixes wrap in a few hours to a day depending on scope. Manufacturer claims work differently. We process those with the supplier on the homeowner’s behalf so nobody has to navigate manufacturer paperwork solo.

Documentation matters on warranty claims. Keep your original quote, the project completion documents, and any photographs taken during construction. These help resolve claims faster.

Most landscape installations sold through big-box retailers or marketplace platforms carry minimal protection. Some offer no workmanship guarantee at all, only the manufacturer terms on materials. That gap is a meaningful risk for homeowners.
