Pressure-treated, cedar, or composite for decks. Each has a place. Composite ages better in Calgary’s UV than people expect. Cedar still wins the warm-wood look. Pressure-treated is the budget answer when the substructure is right.

Paving stone sits under most of our patio work. Why: poured concrete pads get destroyed by freeze-thaw inside a decade. A properly bedded paver patio outlasts that by twenty years. Paving stone patios draw on Burnco and Matcrete suppliers. Base prep and joint stabilisation get the attention most installers skip.
Same base treatment goes under our walkways as the patios. Anything less and the first January will heave a section out of level. Driveways in paver format are the largest scale of the same install, often combined with a small wall along the property line.

Sod, Garden Beds, Trees, Shrubs, and Plants
Zone 3 and zone 4 plant material survives out here. Anything zone 5 and up holds a few seasons, then a hard chinook week kills it. Our tree, shrub, and plant planting draws on Eagle Lake Nursery. Garden bed prep, soil amendments, and mulch get the same attention as the plants.
Sod installation is a spring or fall job, never high July. Grade the soil. Roll out the sod. Water it past the point a homeowner would water it on their own, every day for two weeks. The first thirty days set the lawn for the next thirty years. Lawn maintenance after install keeps the quality.
Outdoor Living: Water Features and Lighting
Water features need winterisation built into the design from day one. The pump sits where it can be pulled in October. Then the basin drains. Otherwise the freeze cracks the liner.
Hours of usable outdoor living stretch from May through October with landscape lighting. Path lights, downlights, accent on trees and water features. Low-voltage in conduit. Stapled to a fence post is what we do not do.
