Landscaping Costs in Calgary

Calgary landscaping cost conversations almost always start the same way. A homeowner has a backyard they want to transform, and no real sense of what the numbers look like. Honest answer to “how much?" takes more than one figure. Simple sod refresh: maybe $3,000. Full backyard transformation with patio, deck, pergola, retaining wall, and planting: north of $80,000 without much trouble. The range between those two endpoints is enormous. Where any one project lands depends on material choice, square footage, site conditions, and how much work the property already needs before construction even starts.

Sungreen has been quoting Calgary landscaping projects since 1990. Ranges below come from current pricing across our active project mix, not from theoretical numbers somebody pulled out of a spreadsheet. Every Sungreen estimate is site-specific. The math changes when the lot is sloped, when access is tight, when existing landscaping needs to come out first, when soil conditions demand additional base work, or when outdoor features need specific structural detailing the homeowner did not see coming.

Average Landscaping Cost by Project Type

Four honest brackets to anchor expectations before getting into individual line items:

Small project, single element: $2,000 to $8,000. That bracket covers sod replacement, a garden bed makeover, a basic patio under 200 square feet, or a small deck.

Medium project, multiple elements: $15,000 to $40,000. Paving stone patio plus walkway fits here. So does deck plus pergola. Same with a full sod and irrigation install.

Large full-yard transformation: $40,000 to $120,000 and up. Complete backyard builds combining hardscape (patio, retaining walls, walkways), softscape (sod, planting, trees), and structures (deck, pergola, lighting) live in this bracket.

Premium custom installations: $100,000 plus. Acreage masterplans, large water features integrated with hardscape, outdoor kitchens with full appliance packages, high-end material specifications throughout. The bracket where nothing about the project sits in the “entry level" column.

Hardscape Landscaping Costs

The built side of a project goes under one umbrella category. Typical installation runs 60 to 80 percent of total cost on a full yard build, both for residential and commercial sites.

Paving Stone Patios

Paving stone patios come in at $25 to $50 per square foot installed. So a standard 300 sq ft patio in concrete pavers lands at $7,500 to $15,000. Natural stone and flagstone patios run higher, $35 to $75/sq ft, putting that same footprint at $10,500 to $22,500. Premium installations with custom borders, picture frames, or inlay patterns add 10 to 20 percent to the totals.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls get priced by face area (height multiplied by length). Modular block walls run $80 to $150/sq ft of face installed. Natural stone walls climb to $150 to $300/sq ft of face. Wood timber walls run cheapest at $50 to $100/sq ft of face. So a typical 600 millimetre by 12 metre backyard retaining wall in modular block lands at $6,400 to $12,000.

Decks, residential services

Decks

Decks run $25 to $70 per square foot installed depending on material. Pressure treated lands at the low end, $25 to $40/sq ft. Cedar moves up to $35 to $55. Composite tops out at $45 to $70. So a standard 300 sq ft deck ranges from $7,500 to $21,000 depending on material and railing choice.

Patios, residential and commercial services

Pergolas

Pergolas span from $3,000 for small cedar builds up to $30,000 plus for large aluminum louvred systems with integrated features. A typical 3 by 4 metre cedar pergola lands at $5,000 to $12,000 installed.

Decks, residential services

Driveways and Walkways

Paving stone driveways come in at $30 to $60 per square foot installed, since vehicle loads demand a heavier base. Walkways match patio pricing, $25 to $50 per square foot for paving stone.

Softscape Landscaping Costs

Softscape is the living side: lawn, plants, trees, and water management. Cost per project is typically lower than hardscape but maintenance over the lifetime of the install is higher.

Fall Yard Cleanup Cost in Calgary

Fall cleanup typically lands at $200 to $500 for standard residential properties. Average city lot comes in at $250 to $400 for leaf removal, final mow, perennial cutback, irrigation shutdown, and gutter clearing.

Acreage fall cleanup with significant tree canopy climbs to $400 to $1,200 because of leaf volume alone. Multiple visits across the leaf-drop window often become necessary in heavy-tree neighbourhoods like Mount Royal or Britannia.

Decks, residential services

Sod Installation

Sod runs $2 to $4 per square foot installed, base preparation included. So a typical 1,500 square foot backyard lawn install lands at $3,000 to $6,000. Soil amendment and grading push the bottom number up on properties with poor topsoil.

Patios, residential and commercial services

Trees and Shrubs

Tree and shrub costs ride on species and size. Nursery-grown tree installed: $250 to $800 each. Shrubs: $50 to $200 each. A typical perimeter planting plan for a residential backyard comes in at $2,000 to $8,000 depending on density and species selection.

Decks, residential services

Garden Beds and Mulch

Garden bed installations land at $30 to $80 per square metre, which covers edging, soil amendment, planting, and mulch topdressing. Bulk mulch refresh on existing beds runs $80 to $150 per cubic metre delivered and installed.

Patios, residential and commercial services

Irrigation Systems

Full-yard irrigation installation with controller, valves, and rotor or spray heads runs $4,000 to $10,000 installed for a typical Calgary residential property. Drip irrigation for garden beds adds $500 to $1,500 on top of that figure. Existing systems can also expand as part of a larger landscaping project rather than being torn out.

Full Yard Renovation Costs

A complete yard transformation in Calgary typically runs $25,000 to $80,000 for a standard residential lot. Acreage properties run higher due to scale. Premium installations on larger lots routinely clear $100,000.

The split inside that number is usually: 50 to 60 percent hardscape, 20 to 30 percent softscape, 10 to 20 percent design, demolition, and finishing. Site conditions can shift the percentages considerably. A heavily sloped lot needing retaining walls pushes the hardscape share up. Flat lots with existing structures push the demolition share up instead.

What Drives Landscaping Cost in Calgary

Five specific factors move the number on every project we quote:

Site access. Tight backyards where materials get brought through narrow gates or carried over distance add labour cost fast. Properties accessible by truck along the rear lot line come in cheaper to build.

Existing conditions. Old concrete to demo, decks to dismantle, mature trees to protect or remove, and poor soil all add cost before a single new piece goes in.

Material grade. Premium paving stones, exotic hardwoods, and architectural-grade lighting all sit higher than entry-level options. Picking the right material spec for a given budget happens during the design conversation, not the install.

Permit and engineering. Retaining walls over 1.5 metres need engineering stamped. Pergolas over 10 square metres need development permits. Engineered drawings and permit fees add another $1,000 to $5,000 on projects that require them.

Calgary climate. Frost line footings, freeze-thaw resilient materials, and proper drainage planning all factor into Calgary landscaping prices. Building shortcuts that work in warmer markets do not survive here past winter three.

How to Get an Accurate Landscaping Estimate

The path to a real number on your project runs through a site visit. Phone quotes and online calculators are useful for order-of-magnitude budgeting but they miss the conditions that drive 20 to 40 percent of the actual cost.

Sungreen estimates are free and site-specific. We measure the space, check the ground conditions, review access, look at existing landscaping, and discuss your priorities. The quote you receive is line-itemed across materials, labour, and any required permits or engineering. No surprises after work starts.

For projects pairing multiple services, the integrated estimate typically comes in lower than the sum of separate estimates from individual contractors, because the trades coordinate on site instead of arriving in sequence. See the individual service pages for decks, fences, paving stone patios, retaining walls, pergolas, water features, and landscape design for more detailed cost breakdowns per category.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does landscaping cost in Calgary?

Residential landscaping projects here range from $2,000 for something small like a sod refresh up to $120,000 plus for a complete custom build with hardscape, softscape, lighting, and irrigation rolled together. Typical mid-range backyard renovations land at $25,000 to $50,000. Premium full-yard transformations routinely clear $80,000.

What is the most expensive part of a landscaping project?

Hardscape elements drive most of the cost. Paving stone patios, retaining walls, decks, and pergolas all run higher per square foot than softscape elements like sod or planting. On a full yard build, hardscape typically eats 50 to 70 percent of total cost.

Why are Calgary landscaping prices higher than some markets?

Calgary's climate forces material and method specifications that cost more than what warmer markets get away with. Frost line footings (1.2 metre minimum), freeze-thaw resilient base preparation, drainage planning, and proper material grading all add labour and material cost compared to a temperate climate build.

How can I keep landscaping costs down?

Phase the project. Build hardscape first, since it is harder to retrofit later, then add softscape over the following seasons. Choose materials in the middle of each category rather than the premium tier. Limit the number of custom features. Get a proper design done before construction starts so the spend goes toward what you actually use.
