How to Compare Landscaping Companies in Calgary

Portfolio photographs are taken at handover. That is the problem with using them to choose a contractor.

Every company’s work looks good on day one. The question you actually care about is what it looks like after four Calgary winters, and no gallery answers that.

What to verify first

Insurance, and specifically liability coverage plus workers compensation. Ask for the certificate rather than the assurance. If someone gets hurt on your property and the coverage is not there, the exposure travels to you.

A physical address and a business history. Landscaping has a high turnover of names, and a warranty is only worth something if the company issuing it is still trading when you need it.

Relevant certification. In hard landscaping, ICPI certification is the industry body for paving stone and segmental wall installation, which is the part of the build that decides longevity. We hold it, and it matters mainly because base preparation and drainage spec are where these projects succeed or fail.

Ask about the part you cannot see

This is the single most useful thing you can do. Ask every company the same technical question and compare the answers.

For a patio: how deep is the excavation, what granular depth goes back in, and are you compacting in lifts? For a wall: where does the drainage exit? For planting: what size is that tree at installation?

Specific answers indicate someone who builds to a standard. Vague answers indicate someone who builds to a price. Both exist and you are entitled to know which you are hiring. Our own build sequence is set out on the retaining walls page and the patio installation page.

Compare scope, not totals

A quote is a number attached to a scope, and the scope is where companies differ. Put the bids side by side and mark what appears on one and not another. Disposal. Geotextile. Edge restraint. Permits. Restoration.

Then ask the higher bidder why their number includes something the other one left out. The answer is usually informative, and occasionally it reveals that the lower bid simply forgot.

Broader cost expectations by service sit on our Calgary landscaping costs page, and having a rough range in mind before you read a quote makes the outliers obvious.

References, asked properly

Recent references tell you about the crew. Older ones tell you about the build.

Ask for a project from three or four years ago and ask the homeowner one question: has anything moved? That is the question that separates companies, because it is the one that only time can answer.

Ask too about what happened when something went wrong, because on a project of any size something does. How a company handles a problem is more predictive than whether they had one.

Local experience is not a slogan

Calgary hands you clay that swells when wet, a freeze-thaw cycle that runs repeatedly through one winter rather than once, and chinooks that thaw the surface while the profile below stays frozen.

Base depths and drainage details that work elsewhere do not automatically work here. A company that has been building through these winters has seen what fails and adjusted. One that has not is applying a specification from a milder climate and will find out at your expense.

Ask how their build differs because of the frost line. If the question lands as unfamiliar, that tells you something.

Design capability, where you need it

Some projects are a single service and some are a sequence. Grade, drainage, hard landscaping, planting and lighting interact, and doing them in the wrong order means paying twice.

If your project spans several elements, a company that can plan the whole thing is worth more than the sum of individual quotes. That is what our landscape design service is for, and on larger properties or commercial sites the sequencing usually matters more than any single line item.

Communication, before you sign

How long did the quote take to arrive? Were questions answered directly? Did anyone visit the site, or was the price produced from photographs?

A company that is difficult to reach while trying to win your work will not become easier once they have it. That pattern holds more reliably than almost anything else in this process.

What we would suggest

Get three quotes. Give all three the same written brief. Ask all three the same technical question about the base. Check insurance on all three. Then choose on scope and answers rather than on the total.

We have been building across Calgary, Chestermere, Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and the surrounding communities since 1990. Estimates are free, itemised, and we will tell you where we think a competing bid has left something out. Get in touch when you have the brief together.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

Pressure to decide immediately, particularly tied to a discount that expires. Good companies in this market are booked; they do not need to close you today.

A quote produced without a site visit on anything involving grade, drainage or structure. Photographs do not show you a slope or an access constraint accurately.

Reluctance to put base depth in writing. That single reluctance predicts more problems than any other signal.

Cash-only arrangements, or a request for a large deposit well ahead of any material being ordered. Deposits are normal; deposits disproportionate to the work about to start are not.

And an inability to name what they installed. A company that cannot tell you the block system or the paver product they intend to use has not planned the build yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before hiring a landscaping company?

Liability insurance and workers compensation, verified by certificate rather than assurance. A physical address and a trading history, because a warranty is only worth something if the company still exists. And relevant certification for the work, which in hard landscaping means ICPI.

How many quotes should I get?

Three is usually enough, provided all three receive the same written brief. More than that tends to add confusion rather than information, particularly if the briefs drift.

What is the single best question to ask?

Something technical about the part you will never see. How deep is the base, and are you compacting in lifts. Specific answers indicate a company building to a standard; vague answers indicate one building to a price.

Do portfolio photos tell me anything useful?

They tell you about taste and scale, not durability. Every project photographs well at handover. Ask instead for a reference from three or four years ago and ask that homeowner whether anything has moved.

Should I choose the company with the best design ideas or the best build reputation?

Build reputation, if you have to pick one. A good design executed on a poor base becomes a maintenance problem within a few winters, whereas a modest design built properly stays right for decades. The better answer is a company that does both, and on multi-element projects that capability is worth paying for.

Is the largest company usually the safest choice?

Not necessarily. Size brings scheduling capacity and administrative reliability. Smaller crews often bring the owner onto your site every day. What matters more than headcount is whether the people quoting the work are the people who will build it, so it is a fair question to ask directly.

One last thing. The company that asks you the most questions before quoting is usually the one thinking hardest about the build.
