Patio Contractors in Calgary: What You Are Actually Paying For
The pavers are maybe a quarter of the job. Everything that makes a patio last is underneath them, invisible from the day it is finished.
Which is exactly why patio quotes vary so widely and why the cheapest one so often becomes the most expensive one four winters later.
The build-up, from the bottom
Excavation first, down through topsoil and organic material to firm subgrade. On Calgary clay that is deeper than people expect. Leave organics under a patio and they break down, and the surface follows them.
Then geotextile, separating the native soil from what goes above it. Skip it and clay migrates up into the granular base over a few seasons, and the base stops behaving like a base.
Then compacted granular fill, placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped and rolled once. This is where a contractor spends time that does not show, and where a rushed job saves money you will pay back later.
Bedding sand, screeded flat. Pavers. Then edge restraint, which is what stops the whole field from spreading sideways, and jointing sand swept in and compacted.
Get the base right and the patio is still flat in twenty years. Get it wrong and no amount of relevelling the surface fixes it, because the problem is below the part you can reach.
Drainage and slope
A patio should shed water away from the house, at a consistent fall. Not dead flat. Flat patios pond, and ponded water beside a foundation is a problem that outgrows the patio.
The fall needs to be small enough that furniture sits level and large enough that water actually moves. On a large patio that is a levelling exercise across the whole field, which is skilled work.
Where the water goes afterwards matters too. Shedding it neatly off the patio into a low spot beside the fence just relocates the puddle.
What a quote should itemise
Excavation depth and disposal. Geotextile. Granular base material and depth, with compaction in lifts stated. Bedding layer. Paver product, named, with the pattern. Cut allowance for edges and curves. Edge restraint type. Jointing sand, and whether it is polymeric. Restoration around the works.
If base depth is not written down, it is not promised. That is the single line to look for.

Freeze-thaw, and why Calgary is harder
Clay soils that hold water and swell. A winter that runs through the freeze-thaw cycle repeatedly rather than freezing once and staying there. Chinooks that thaw the top of the profile while the ground below stays frozen, trapping meltwater exactly where you least want it.
That combination is why base depth here is not the same as base depth in a milder market, and why copying a specification from an American supplier’s guide produces patios that heave.
Heaving shows up as a lip between pavers, usually at an edge or beside a downspout. Once it starts it accelerates, because the lip catches water.
Materials, briefly
Concrete pavers do most residential work. Predictable, replaceable individually if one gets damaged, available in a range that suits most houses.
Natural stone and flagstone read differently and cost more, mainly in labour, because pieces get fitted rather than laid. On an older character home it is frequently worth it.
Poured concrete is a different product with different failure modes. It is cheaper per square metre and it cracks in ways that cannot be repaired invisibly, whereas a paver field can have a section lifted and reset.
Access, and why it changes the price
Every cubic metre of excavated clay leaves the site and every cubic metre of granular fill arrives. On a corner lot with a wide gate that is machinery. On a zero lot line infill with a metre of side access it is wheelbarrows, and the labour figure changes completely.
Contractors who quote without seeing the access are guessing, and the guess usually gets revised upward once work starts.
Questions that sort the bids
How deep is the excavation and what depth of granular base goes back in? Are you compacting in lifts? Is geotextile included? What edge restraint? Polymeric jointing sand or regular? What is the fall, and where does the water end up?
Ask about the fall specifically. It is the question that tells you whether someone is thinking about the patio in February.
Where a patio sits in a larger plan
On a sloped lot, a usable patio often needs a level area created first, which means a retaining wall before any pavers arrive. Sequencing those two together is cheaper than doing them in separate years, mostly because the excavation and the material deliveries happen once.

How long a patio should last
Decades, on a properly built base. The pavers themselves outlive most of the houses they sit behind, and the failure point is almost never the product.
What ages is the jointing sand, which washes out over years and wants topping up, and the edge restraint if it was undersized. Both are maintenance rather than replacement.
What fails is the base, and it fails for reasons that were decided on the day it was built: depth, compaction, whether geotextile was used, and where the water goes. None of those can be corrected later without lifting the surface.
That is the reason to spend attention rather than money on the excavation conversation. A patio built 50 millimetres deeper in its base costs slightly more once. A patio that heaves costs the whole surface twice.
