Full Landscaping Services Calgary

Calgary properties land on our schedule for one of two reasons. A homeowner has a back yard that has never worked, and they want the whole thing redone in one season. Or a property manager has a building front that looks tired, and tenants are complaining. Either way the call comes to the same number, and the same Sungreen crew handles the job from first sketch to final walkthrough. Thirty five years in, three or four full landscape builds running at once on a busy week.

Full landscaping services here means one contract from design through final sod. Not a referral chain to four subtrades. One scope sheet covers the patio, the retaining walls, the decks, fences, planting, sod, lighting, irrigation, water features. Concrete base for your patio gets poured by the same guys who lay the pavers, set the wall, back fill the soil for the sod. Coordination problems disappear when one company owns the whole build.

What Full Service Means On A Sungreen Job

Most homeowners who phone us already have one specific problem in mind. A drainage corner that pools. One deck that has gone soft. Or a retaining wall that is leaning. We get the call, walk your property, and almost always find two or three other things worth handling in the same trip. Value of the full service approach: one mobilization, one design pass, one warranty.

Free estimates on every job. An hour is what the walk through usually takes. Tape measure comes out, questions get asked about what the family actually uses your yard for, sight lines get noted, drainage spots pinned, sun exposure mapped, the way the kids or dogs move through the space all logged. End of the conversation, a rough number is in mind. Whether the landscape design wants to grow into a phased build is usually clear by then too. Several Bearspaw acreages on the books have run as multi year phased builds. Year one, hardscape and base planting. By the second season, pergola goes in plus a water feature. Fine detail and lighting close out year three.

ICPI certified means our paving crews carry the certification from the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute. Calgary freeze thaw cycles destroy bases that have been cheaped out on. ICPI specs the depth, the aggregate, the compaction. We follow them. Plenty of failed driveways and patios built without those specs have made the case for us.

Residential Landscaping Services Calgary

Residential work is the bulk of our calendar. Range on most jobs runs $25,000 to $250,000 depending on scope, materials, grade complexity. Full landscaping treatment on a Calgary residential property usually covers some combination of what follows below.

Calgary Decks, Patios, And Outdoor Living

Decks get built in cedar, pressure treated, or composite. Each material has a different look, different cost, different maintenance reality. Composite costs more up front and pays back in years six through fifteen when cedar starts to need sanding and oiling. Cedar wins on warmth and smell. Pressure treated is the budget pick, and a good pressure treated deck stained every few years lasts twenty years easily.

Patio work is mostly paving stones on a properly built base. Concrete pours happen when the design calls for it, sure. But pavers win in Calgary nine times out of ten. Freeze thaw movement cracks concrete slabs in a way it never cracks individual paving stones. Bad cracks in poured concrete stay bad. A heaved paver, on the other hand, gets lifted, the base under it re leveled, the same stone dropped back into place. Full breakdown of materials and base depths sits on our patio installation page.

Paving Stones, Walkways, And Driveways Calgary

Front walks, side paths, driveway aprons, full driveways. Same paver families work across all four. Roman cobble, Holland stone, large format slabs, permeable pavers. Choice of stone matters less than what is underneath. Six inches of compacted aggregate base on a driveway, four on a walkway, geotextile between subsoil and gravel on anything in a soft spot. Get the base wrong and the prettiest paver job in Calgary still fails by year five.

Most of our full service builds end up with paving stone work somewhere on the property. Flagstone path from the driveway to a side gate. Stamped concrete look paver patio off the kitchen door. Fire pit circle laid out in pinwheel pattern. Good design pulls the stones together so the materials read as one cohesive yard, not five disconnected projects bolted on.

Calgary Retaining Walls And Grade Work

A surprising number of Calgary lots have grade problems the original builder ignored. Back yard slopes down to a fence. Water pools against the foundation. Soil washes onto the neighbour’s lawn. Retaining walls fix the grade. Most of our retaining walls come in at three feet or under. Anything over four feet in Calgary triggers a permit and an engineered design. So we terrace a lot of jobs into two shorter walls instead of one tall one. A two foot wall, a four foot bench in between, then another two foot wall. Cheaper, no permit, and the look reads better in our experience.

Allan Block, Roman Stack, Versa Lok, plus natural Rundle stone for the higher end builds are what we use most. The retaining wall page has the full material breakdown. Drainage behind the wall is where most failures actually show up. Perforated drain tile gets installed, clean gravel goes in for backfill, geotextile keeps the fines out of the gravel. Walls that skip the drainage lean inside five years, almost without fail.

Fences, Pergolas, And Privacy Services

Fences in Calgary come up on almost every job because lot lines are tight and the neighbours sit close. Six foot cedar privacy is what most homeowners ask for first. Composite is gaining ground because the colour holds and nobody wants to stain a fence every other year. Where a homeowner wants the property line marked without blocking sight, ornamental aluminum is the call. The fence options page covers the Calgary bylaw rules on height.

Pergolas mostly come in cedar, with composite and aluminum picking up in the last few years. A 12 by 12 cedar pergola over a paver patio is the standard back yard centerpiece on a full landscape build. Attached to the house or freestanding, both work. Freestanding lets you place the pergola where the shade actually falls in July, not where the wall happens to be.

Trees, Shrubs, Sod, And Plant Installation In Calgary

Plant installation gets the least respect on a landscape build and matters the most over time. Hardscape sets the bones. Plants and trees finish the yard within two seasons. Calgary hardy stock is what we put in the ground: Swedish aspen, Schubert chokecherry, Amur maple, Ohio buckeye for trees. Shrub layer mostly comes from Karl Foerster grass, hydrangeas, junipers, dwarf mugo pine. Annual plants vary client by client. Some homeowners want the colour every year, some want pure perennial shrubs so they do not have to think about it.

Sod installation finishes most jobs. Calgary lawns get hammered by chinooks and brittle by August. Soil prep matters more than the turf itself. Four to six inches of topsoil under the sod, turf laid the same day it comes off the truck, deep daily watering for the first three weeks. Skip the soil prep and the lawn looks rough by year two.

Calgary Water Features, Lighting, And Irrigation

Water features have a strong following on full landscape jobs. Bubbling rock fountains are easiest. Pondless waterfalls give the sound without the maintenance of an open pond. Full ponds with fish are still requested, mostly on the larger Bearspaw and Springbank acreages. Pond winterization happens every October. Skip it and the liner cracks.

Landscape lighting gets installed as part of the build because trenching when your yard is open costs a fraction of trenching after the sod is down. LED path lights, uplighting on trees and the front of the house, deck step lights, accent lighting on water features. Irrigation works the same way. Run the lines while the soil is open. Heads get added later as the planting matures.

Commercial Landscaping Calgary

Commercial services are roughly a third of our calendar. Most homeowners do not know we do commercial at all. Commercial landscaping calgary clients run from small strip mall property managers to multi building strata corporations to retail chains to industrial sites in the SE quadrant. Same fundamentals as residential. Scheduling, contracts, maintenance terms look different.

Calgary Property Managers And Strata Buildings

Property managers are the steadiest commercial relationships we run. Picture a property manager juggling fifteen buildings across Calgary, and the last thing they need is to call three trades to get a courtyard fixed. We get the call, scope the job, hand back one number, and the work happens on a coordinated calendar with the building’s tenants in mind.

Strata buildings carry their own complexity. Owners committees vote on the work, and the budget cycle runs on the strata’s fiscal year. We have learned to scope strata work with phased pricing so the committee can approve a multi year plan in one meeting. Front entrance refresh year one. Side garden bed reset year two. Visitor parking paver replacement year three. The committee gets a single proposal and the maintenance crew gets a predictable schedule.

Multi Family And Condo Landscaping Calgary

Condo complexes get harder every year because the original landscaping is twenty or thirty years old and the maintenance budgets have not kept up. Common issues we see on a first walk through: failed retaining walls along property lines, root heaved walkways near mature trees, tired shrubs in beds full of overgrown junipers, irrigation systems still running on old controllers from the nineties.

We have rebuilt landscaping on three condo complexes in the SW in the last four years. Each one started with a property manager call about one specific problem and turned into a multi stage rebuild as the strata council saw what was possible. Build runs at night or during shoulder seasons to keep tenant disruption down. Garbage enclosures get rebuilt the same week as the courtyard. Mailbox kiosks get re paved. Visitor parking lines get restriped after the new edge restraints go in.

Retail, Office, And Industrial Sites Calgary

Retail properties care about three things: curb appeal at the entrance, clear sight lines for safety, snow load management once October hits. Plaza entrance rebuilds are something we have done for several Calgary retail anchors. New paver entries, replaced concrete bollards, refreshed seasonal planters, replanted boulevard trees the city forgot about ten years ago.

Office parks run similar but with more emphasis on the tenant experience. Front entrance hardscape, patio space for lunch breaks, accessible walkways from the parking lot. Our team handles AODA relevant grade transitions and accessible curb cuts because failing those is a liability the building owner does not want.

Industrial sites in the SE and NE quadrants want the opposite of curb appeal. Durability. One 40 acre laydown property does not want decorative planting. It wants compacted gravel, durable concrete bollards, snow storage zones marked, a perimeter fence that withstands forklift contact. Several industrial site improvements on our books had less to do with beautification and more to do with getting traffic patterns to work on a 24 hour operation.

New Construction Landscaping Calgary

Developers and builders bring us in on new construction for the rough grade, the show home landscape package, and the boulevard plantings the city requires before final acceptance. Boulevard requirements catch a lot of builders off guard. The City of Calgary tree count per linear foot of frontage has to be met before the building permit closes. A list of city approved species is something we keep current, and the planting window gets coordinated with the builder’s schedule so the boulevard does not delay the close.

Show home packages get scoped for visual impact in season. Turf goes in the day before the show home opens. Flower bed colour is timed to peak through the May long weekend. Show home landscape rotations have been on the books for several Calgary builders, and the calendar is tight because the marketing schedule does not move.

Commercial Maintenance And Snow Clearing Calgary

Commercial maintenance contracts are how a lot of our property manager relationships continue past the install. Spring and fall cleanup, weekly mowing through the growing season, garden bed cultivation, fertilizer rotation, irrigation start up and winterization, snow clearing once November settles in.

Snow clearing on commercial sites runs to a service level agreement: trigger depth, response time, salt application standard, designated snow storage. A 2 cm trigger means we start plowing at two centimetres. Most retail sites run 2 cm with priority response before opening hours. Office parks run 5 cm with completion by 7:30 am. Industrial sites usually want 24 hour coverage with on call response. Sungreen runs the snow removal program as part of the year round commercial calendar so the same crew handling summer maintenance is the one clearing the lot in January.

Our Process From First Call To Final Walkthrough

Most residential jobs follow the same arc. Commercial jobs add a procurement step in the middle for the rest. Basics stay the same.

Phone call to 403-256-7500 books the walk through. Out at your property the next available morning, we walk the lot with you. Conversation covers your wish list, the budget, when the work needs to happen. A verbal rough number leaves with us. Written quote follows inside the week.

Design comes next. Smaller jobs run with a hand sketch and a materials list, nothing fancier. Bigger jobs get a 2D layout drawing showing the paver patio, walls, beds, key features. A 3D render comes out for the largest builds so you can see what the pergola looks like from the kitchen window before any cedar gets ordered. Changes to the design happen now, before the dig.

Contract signing locks the scope, the materials, the start date, the payment schedule. Most jobs run a deposit at signing, a progress payment at mid build, a final payment at walkthrough.

Build crew shows up on the start date. Big jobs sometimes mobilize with a small team for excavation and grading first, then the full hardscape crew rolls in, then the planting crew. Site stays clean. Neighbours hear from us before the noisy days happen.

Walkthrough closes the job. You walk the build with the lead. Punch list gets signed. Warranty paperwork comes with the final invoice. Our process page has more detail on each step. Warranty coverage details live on the warranty page.

Service Areas Across Calgary And Beyond

Calgary city limits are the core service area. Sungreen also runs jobs across the southern Alberta corridor regularly. The regular calendar takes us to Chestermere, Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Bearspaw, Springbank, Langdon, Strathmore, High River. De Winton acreages get added to the mix on most weeks too.

Out of city acreage work has its own rhythm. Bigger lots, more drainage and grading work, longer driveways, fewer bylaw constraints. A typical acreage build, off the top of my head: 300 foot driveway, half acre of irrigated lawn, a 1,200 square foot patio with a pergola, a stocked pond, a windbreak planting along the property line. These projects often run on a multi year phased contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a full landscaping service in Calgary actually include?

Short answer from someone who has scoped a few thousand of them: design plus hardscape construction plus planting plus sod, with any extras like water features, lighting, or irrigation rolled in. One contract on the residential side. Commercial scopes add snow clearing and seasonal maintenance services.

How much does a full landscape installation cost in Calgary?

Range is wide on purpose. Most residential full landscape installs land between $25,000 for a small back yard refresh and $250,000 for an acreage build with hardscape, planting, water feature, outdoor kitchen. Commercial scopes range wider again because square footage and material grade swing the number heavily. The landscaping cost page goes deeper.

How long does a full landscaping project take?

Small back yard refresh: three weeks typical. A mid size build with retaining walls and a paver patio runs six to ten weeks. Larger acreage builds with phased planting take a full season, sometimes two. Calgary’s outdoor build window sits roughly mid April through mid October.

Do you handle commercial landscaping contracts?

Yes, plenty of them. Property management firms, strata corporations, multi family complexes, retail chains, office parks, and industrial sites are all on the regular roster. Snow removal and seasonal maintenance get scoped right alongside the install where the relationship runs year round.

What about Calgary frost and freeze thaw on hardscape?

Freeze thaw is the dominant design constraint in Calgary, full stop. Aggregate base goes in six to eight inches deep under a driveway, four under a walkway. Drainage gets installed behind retaining walls so the water does not freeze in the backfill. Concrete cracks; paving stones move and lift back. Most of our hardscape on residential and commercial properties is paving stones for that reason alone.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. WCB coverage is current, liability insurance is in place, ICPI certification stays current on the paving team. Certificates and insurance details get sent with every commercial contract. Residential customers can request them at any time.

Do you handle small jobs, or only full landscape builds?

Both. A single retaining wall, one fence replacement, or one back yard patio. Many of our long term residential customers started with one small job and came back for more when the rest of their property needed attention.

Can you work with our existing landscape designer or architect?

Yes. Builds off the drawings of independent designers and architects come through here regularly. Our design pass on those becomes more about constructability review and material substitution where it makes sense.
